In 1810, under the leadership of Miguel Hidalgo and José María Morelos, the independence war broke out. In 1821 the city was conquered by rebels under the leadership of Agustín de Iturbide.
More than half of the country’s industrial production is generated in Mexico City or in the surrounding area. Pharmaceuticals, chemicals, textiles and electronic articles, steel and transport equipment, as well as various foodstuffs and consumables of the light industry are produced here. Mexico City is the center of a developing industrial belt that stretches from Guadalajara in the west to Veracruz on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico in the east.
